Holidays & Healthful Eating

I love this time of year, when the light fare of summer gives way to cool days and even cooler nights. There is nothing better this time of year than a delicious, slow-cooked meal that echoes the love and care put into it. And nothing says “love and care” more than the holiday table.

Are you a stickler for tradition, or are you looking for inventive, lighter options to round out your holiday menu? If you would like to have all of the taste of tradition but with a different spin (and often fewer calories/carbs), look at the side suggestions below. Who knows… you may just like them more than the traditional versions!

  • Potato and Turnip Mash (Turnips contain fewer carbohydrates and lend a light peppery flavor to mashed potatoes)

  • Potato and Butternut Squash Mash (Butternut squash gives traditional mashed potatoes a beautiful golden hue as well as some additional fiber)

  • Stuffed Acorn Squash (Can be filled with the mixture of your choice, from just vegetables and spices, to a sausage and apple dressing – which minimizes the amount of dressing consumed and maximizes the squash, a high fiber option)

  • Orange Mashed Yams (A simple and lightly sweetened way to enjoy delicious and nutritious Yams, without the gobs of butter, brown sugar and marshmallows)

  • Green Beans with Red Onion and a Warm Dijon Vinaigrette (A light coating of vinaigrette and tangy sautéed red onions stand in for the heavy mushroom soup and fried onions, resulting in much fewer calories)

  • Glazed Brussels Sprouts with Bacon (A light sweet and tart glaze covers tender brussels sprouts, which are sprinkled with toasted almonds and salty bacon)

As always, I welcome your feedback… how you liked the recipes listed here, what recipes you’d like to see for future newsletters, or things you are curious about. Connect with us online too!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Bon Appetit!
